DISABILITIES

We welcome applications from students with disabilities. We have served students with particular needs in the past and are anxious to meet all reasonable requirements of students with special needs. The best arrangement is for you to discuss your needs in advance with a member of staff (see below) and, if possible, arrange to visit LST so that a mutual assessment can take place. In this way we can try to devise and agree a solution which will be tailor-made to your needs and our ability to provide.

Physical access

LST has a ramped entrance with a power assisted door to the ground floor of the main building (Laing) with video link to the Reception desk. The Guthrie Centre (Research & Islamic Studies) and Mitchell Hall (accommodation) also have ramped entrances. In the Guthrie Centre there is also a chair lift to the first floor and in Laing and the Student Centre there is a lift to the first floor. There is no automated access to the first floor of the Library but in the past students with mobility problems have been helped by other students. In Laing, the chapel, library, offices and two lecture/seminar rooms are on the ground floor, as well as a shower/wc and a larger bedroom suitable for a disabled person. The dining room, accounts, training department and all the main lecture rooms are on the first floor.

Equipment needs

We would be happy to investigate equipment needs which may assist you with study, in liaison with professional advisers. We do not have funds specifically for this purpose, but would look into grants and awards which may be available.

Support and counselling

Some students may be eligible for practical help e.g. with dressing and washing from community services provided by NHS or Social Services. Sometimes it is appropriate to ask other students to help with simple tasks.

During term-time a local GP holds a weekly surgery at LST and students who are qualified nurses and doctors offer their services on an "on call" basis.

Counselling services for students can be arranged through the Watford Christian Counselling Service
