John's call to Christian service took the form of a shift in subjects rather than careers. Initially trained in music, taking prizes in International competitions for orchestral composition, he subsequently studied theology at LST and St John’s College, Nottingham. Now an Old Testament specialist, his research focused on the structure of Isaiah 40-55.
John prefers to maintain a diverse range of interests, however, and is as preoccupied with subjects such as contemporary opera and minimalism as with the evolution/creation debate, male (hetero-) sexuality and the development of monotheism in Ancient Israel. He is the author of the Deeper Encounter series, a six-volume set of small group study notes published by Scripture Union, and Book Reviews Editor for Evangelical Quarterly.
As a father of seven children ranging in age from junior school to (just) post-university, John views his wife and family as a vitally important part of his life. He keeps CDs for at least 14 different operas in his office (with the pop music hidden as MP3s), enjoys photography and watching Star Trek. He still composes, though normally restricting himself to the musicians available at his local community church, where he is the pianist and preacher.
