Director of Open Learning, John Wilks, made his third visit to Bangladesh to preside over a graduation ceremony of students completing studies with our partner organisation.
When the organisation was established in Bangladesh, they bought open learning courses from LST and translated them into Bengali. Now, Bengali language evening classes are structured around open learning materials.
Students in Dhaka receive lectures from the faculty, as well as completing personal study and the same assessments as our UK Open Learning students.
Over a weekend conference, students celebrated completing either certificate or diploma level studies, with 20 graduating at each level.
John also spent time helping the team as they seek to expand their training, with the increased capability of students now able to complete degree level study. Six of those completing their diploma are expected to apply to study the degree in English to receive a Middlesex University validated qualification. A further 14 are aiming to complete studies in Bengali.
John identifies, ‘It’s certainly very exciting to see the new opportunities available as the organisation expands its operations. They are still unable to teach all of the students that apply with waiting lists up to 5 times longer than the number of students they can accept!’
