That’s the honour which has been bestowed on former LST student the Revd Jonathan Woodhouse who has been appointed Chaplain General of the British Army (Land Forces).
He brings a wealth of experience to this prestigious job. Having trained here at LST in the 70’s, he started his career as a Baptist minister in Eastbourne and Croydon. As a Baptist he has broken new ground by reaching this important position.
The job comes with many responsibilities but most importantly the Chaplain General will oversee the spiritual wellbeing of soldiers at all levels in the military structures. He will accompany troops to the battleground, carrying out the same duties as a local vicar would.
His postings to date have included tours in Iraq and Germany where he helped to train and teach soldiers in what is known as character training in the army (courage, discipline, selfless commitment, integrity, loyalty, respect for others).
According to the Diocese of London, a formal Army chaplaincy has been part of the British Army since 1796 and from 1999 there's been an increase in the number of chaplains. The MOD website (Ministry of Defence) recognises that Army chaplains can enable soldiers to cope with the harsh realities of war.
